The hardest part of trying to get my training business going has been sitting down to think about the”why” of it. Why do I want to do this? Why should you hire me? Answering these questions requires me to spend time engaging in a type of navel-gazing self reflection that took up way too much of my time when I was young and trying to figure out who I was. Later, I found that I was a lot happier by doing, and allowing the answers to my questions to come from my actions.
But here we are. Why should you hire me? Why do I want to help you get stronger? Who am I?
If my actions answer the questions, then I guess to start, I’m a guy who is quickly approaching my 50th birthday, and I’m still doing the thing I did best when I was 15: I’m showing up consistently in the gym, getting stronger. I’m better now than I was then because I’ve gotten so much wrong, that I had no choice but to learn to get it right. I’ve found out what works by doing it, and also from seeking out great coaches so that I could learn from them.
I’ve trained with barbells, bodyweight, kettlebells, and dumbbells. I’ve played lacrosse and rugby, I’ve run and I’ve thrown, I’ve competed in strongman and Highland games, and I’ve trained in martial arts. I’ve been pretty good at some of those things (rugby, martial arts) and pretty bad at others (Highland games and strongman).
I had fun with all of them. I have fun most days that I go to the gym, or that I swing a kettlebell around my living room. I feel good, I look good, I move well. If you want those things, I’ve made a ton of mistakes for you, and I know what works. Whether you want to get into the gym or workout from home, I can show you what to do so that you can the results you want.
Recently, I asked my first two clients for testimonials. What came across from both of them is that I meet you where you are, I’m not a drill sergeant type, and I get results.
I think that sentence goes a long way toward summarizing what I offer to anyone who wants to train. I haven’t forgotten what it was like to start; it’s bewildering. When there are so many different things you can do, what should you do first?
Or maybe you’re well past that early stage of being lost and confused, but you stopped somewhere and you’re trying to get back at it. You aren’t really a beginner, but you can’t just pick up again where you left off. I’ve been there; I’ve got you covered.
I know what I think you should do, but maybe you don’t quite trust me, or the process yet. Maybe you’re too stressed out in your real life to have some pushy “coach” ordering you around the gym. Maybe you don’t want to go the gym at all in this crazy, Covid world. It’s ok. I haven’t discovered the perfect workout that everyone should do. We’ll collaborate on the right one for you, based on what you are able to do.
It all comes down to results. Whether you want to add muscle, lose fat, and look better in a t shirt (or out of one), or you want to feel and move better in your 50 year old body, I’ll get you there. Wherever you are right now.
